If you have Peco, the regulated peco electricity rates utility that serves Philadelphia and most of southeastern Pennsylvania, you can save on your electricity rates by taking advantage of the state’s Energy Choice program. The program allows customers to choose their electricity generation supplier and realize savings on their power supply charges, which make up about half of their monthly bill.
In the PECO area, many third-party electricity providers offer competitive energy plans. These plans vary by price per kilowatt-hour, plan features and other amenities. In addition to providing a competitive alternative to the default rate that comes with a PECO service, many providers also offer incentives for switching and money-saving tips for consumers.

Residential customers with the default service provider can take part in a voluntary time-of-use rate structure that will include “peak” generation rates from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and “super off-peak” rates between midnight and 6 a.m. daily. The structure is designed to encourage energy efficiency and shift usage to less expensive times. Customers who participate in the new rate structure will remain under it until they return to PECO’s default service provider or become ineligible for it. Those who switch back to the utility will not be subject to a shut-off for nonpayment of service, Cicero said.
If you do decide to switch, the process is quick and easy. Once you select your new supplier, the new company takes care of the rest and will switch you during your next meter read cycle. There is no need for a service technician to visit your home and you won’t experience any interruption in service.
